Position description

The Bay Area Writing Project (BAWP) in the Berkeley School of Education (BSE) at the University of California, Berkeley seeks individuals to serve in the position of Teacher of Special Programs (TSP) to act as Teacher Consultants for the program.

BAWP is a professional development organization of, by, and for teachers of writing at all grade levels and in all disciplines. BAWP is dedicated to improving the teaching and uses of writing through a variety of programs-both on the university campus and in the schools of the Bay Area.

With its inaugural Summer Institute in 1974, BAWP became the first Writing Project site, subsequently influencing the establishment of the California and National Writing Project networks. For the past 50 years, BAWP's successful model of leadership and learning has hinged on the idea that the "best teachers of teachers are other teachers." As such, BAWP offers professional development workshops for in-service educators, led by Teacher Consultants. BAWP also provides Teacher Consultants with opportunities for exploring excellent writing instruction in youth writing programs, and facilitation of "teachers as writers" programs.

Successful candidates for this position will be invited to participate in a 3-week Writing Project Summer Institute in the Teaching of Writing, which is a requirement of the position. TSPs in the Bay Area Writing Project will need to successfully complete the Writing Project Summer Institute to be held on campus during the last three weeks of June 2025.

Key Responsibilities of the position include:

  • Planning and facilitating professional development workshops for adult educators.
  • Participating in needs assessments in advance of delivery of workshops.
  • Creating and sharing materials with participants.
  • Reviewing evaluations of workshops and communicating with the program Director and Coordinator.

Additional responsibilities of the position may include:

  • Communicating with participants in advance of and after workshops.
  • Working as a team, planning and debriefing with other presenters.

This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

This position is not an Adjunct or Senate Faculty position.
