Ko wai mātou? - Who are we?

Our Pacific theme at Waikato isimua. For many of us with roots in the Pacific, imuaor words like it are familiar to us. In te reo Māori, i mua atumeans ''before''. In Samoa, muamua means ''to advance'', and also ''before'' and ''unprecedented''. In Tonga, laka atu ki muʻa means ''go forward''.

At the University of Waikato, our ongoing purpose is to imua - that is, to go forward and lead from the front in terms of Pacific learner, staff, family and community success. Join us to contribute to strategic initiatives designed to do this.

We also believe that Pacific learner and staff success is closely connected to the wider success of our local, regional, national and international Pacific communities. This is why we work regularly with Pacific community organisations, government agencies, churches, businesses and other stakeholders to deliver better outcomes for Pacific communities.

Ngā kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

This new role reports to the Assistant Vice-Chancellor Pacific and will be filled at either Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level depending on the credentials of the successful applicant. The position is a strategic initiative of the 2021-2025 Pacific Strategic Plan. The name has been gifted by our Tongan community and suggests a teacher of teachers.

The Taki Ako Pacific Lecturer/Senior Lecturer will support teaching staff, working closely with colleagues in the Centre for Tertiary Teaching and Learning. The Taki Ako will also have responsibility for four cultural legacy and research-based student initiatives designed to clarify and smooth pathways, enhance academic and digital skills and build key relationships from the first-year of undergraduate study to degree completion and progression to, and success in, higher degrees.

Ko wai koe? - Who are you?

You will have a PhD in a relevant discipline, (or be in the final stages of completion if applying at Lecturer level) and have experience with inclusive, flexible and culturally-responsive teaching strategies.

You will have broad and in-depth knowledge of Pacific education, including Pacific identities, perspectives and cultural knowledge and connections with Pacific communities and organisations. Your passion to support staff and students with Pacific cultural knowledge will be second nature to you.

You will have demonstrated scholarly expertise and research experience related to tertiary teaching and learning, including an emerging or established publication track record and an active current programme of research; and you will be motivated to supervise higher degree research students.

The Lecturer salary range is NZ$80,837 to $97,051 per year, and the Senior Lecturer salary range is NZ$99,780 to $116,160 per year. The salary will be commensurate with the level of appointment.
