Job Description

The Department of English at Old Dominion University invites applicants for an Assistant Professor of Rhetoric with a specialization in African-American Rhetoric. This is a 10-month annual tenure track appointment that begins July 25, 2025.

This Assistant Professor will teach 3:2 load in the department’s thriving Rhetoric and Writing Studies programs at the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels in online, hybrid, and on-site capacities. Specifically, they will teach general education courses, writing and introductory rhetoric courses for majors, and graduate courses in historical rhetoric and their specialization. They will also engage with the scholarly conversations about African-American rhetoric and mentor graduate students, and the position offers opportunities for original course offerings in each program.

Minimum required education and/or special licenses, registrations, trainings, or certifications
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in English with a specialization in Rhetorical Studies and African-American Rhetoric by July 24, 2025.

Minimum required level and type of experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities

Applicants must have expertise, experience, or be able to demonstrate how they will teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Grant-funded research.
  • Experience with online teaching and learning.
  • Experience with interdisciplinary and community-based research.
  • Experience teaching racially diverse and underrepresented populations.
