His major interest is using social science methods in investigative reporting, chiefly computer-assisted reporting. He is co-writing a book with Holly Hacker of the Dallas Morning News about how to use of social science methods in investigative reporting for Investigative Reporters and Editors, the largest investigative reporting organization in the world. IRE also operates the National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting. The book mainly focuses on how to use the scientific method and SPSS statistical software to conduct more systematic and complex data analysis, from exploratory data analysis to multiple regression. In addition, he has twice been a speaker and panelist at the national CAR Conference, and he has conducted numerous state, regional and national workshops in computer-assisted reporting.
