Her research and teaching interests include a focus on slavery, the Civil War and Reconstruction, the era Jim Crow, the Great Migration, and the Civil Rights Movement. She has been named the J. Victor and Beulah E. Monke Scholar at Washington University in St. Louis, has received funding from the Mellon Mays Graduate Initiatives Program, and has received a Roberts Graduate Fellowship from the Eisenhower Institute.
